Mark Cullen’s Canadian Garden Primer

markcullenThe Canadian Garden Primer by Mark Cullen

It pays to be a wealth of useless knowledge. Last week, I won Mark Cullen’s new book The Canadian Garden Primary from @KimPlumley ‘s Twitter contest all because I knew that “Love Apples” was another term for tomatoes. I know, I’m endlessly fascinating…

The book is beautiful. It’s full of lush photos that have me half fooled into thinking this organic growing thing will be easy. Of course, I’m not a complete idiot. I know there will be work involved. And more than one tear shed over the pesticide ban. And probably some ladybugs since they make a great natural insect control device.

The ladybug trick is in Cullen’s book – but it’s one of the few gardening tips I actually know. One Father’s Day, we got my father-in-law a bag of a thousand ladybugs for his garden. He couldn’t wait to get them home – so he didn’t. He opened the bag. In my house. Hilarity ensued.

This year, I’ve decided to start with some vegetables. Nothing too hard, nothing too above ground because I figure with the thugs masquerading as raccoons in my neighbourhood, lettuce and other above ground leafy veggies don’t stand a chance. I’m going for beets and peas – things that I hope will do well in the somewhat shady patch we dug out last weekend.

I’ll let you know how it goes. And more on my adventures in gardening as I make my way through Cullen’s masterful and accessible “how to” book. Incidentally, a portion of the proceeds from this book is being donated to S.H.A.R.E Agricultural Foundation, providing relief to under privileged farmers in 3rd world countries.   Everybody wins….

“The Canadian Garden Primer” by Mark Cullen is available in Canada nationwide at bookstores everywhere. Yet another reason for our American friends to make the trip North this summer….

This website does not show up correctly on my droid – you might want to try and fix that.

I think one of your ads triggered my browser to re-size, you may well want to put that on your blacklist.
I just added this blog site to my rss reader.

Thanks, I have recently been hunting for facts about this subject matter for ages and yours is the best I have located so far.

  2. Thanks, we will look into that.
